the title should explain a lot. i cant put the s-word here because i dont know what will happen to my blog, but in this post, i will talk so much about my favorite song of all time: Everyone's A Star by 5SOS.
i think this is the only song that i follow religiously since the first teaser until 5SOS release the asia tour, which i wouldnt participate at all. the concept is pretty awesome, i like the aesthetics, especially the colors they chose on every post. neon colors, flashing lights, stars, and super hypnotic. feels like watching a group of men suddenly emerge from the ground with extravagant clothes and hairstyles, and those four dead men alive walking through the streets living like there is no tomorrow.
either its because they already knew that tomorrow will soon arrive to cradle their body back to the soil, or the fact that their behavior would lead them to their fantastic-bizarro-second-death where now everyone knew their name and people would weep for days, months even, because they regret the time where people ignore them for death.
the song Everyone's A Star sits prettily on my mind ever since 5SOS released it last year. its super catchy with interesting beat and hauntingly beautiful vocals, packed with equally uncanny lyrics that repeats again and again inside my head. if i had the chance to meet up with St. Michael, i would ask him to play this song on the purgatory to comforts the soul. funny enough, one of the 5SOS members is Michael. Michael Clifford.
is this a coincidence? is Michael already handling what i wanted to ask for the Saint? and another question: what if Everyone's A Star is talking about the people inside the purgatory who was once a star in their lifetime, so 5SOS made this as a tribute for them? well, that is a lot of questions for someone who once sobbed real hard to this song, so back to the main topic.
the song feels like a prayer to me. if you read the whole lyrics without listening to the song, maybe you will catch on what i meant. a prayer for someone who is always constantly begging for days, wanting something that is bad for them and it acts as a glorious medicine with 24 hours expiration date. on the other side, it feels like whoever they pray to was also begging. two sides of magnet pulling on each other, clasping each other hand as if they are going to melt and combining to be something of a big grouchy-crunchy pile of dough.
praying for someone who is begging and begging for someone who is praying, but there is a small and thin barrier yet stronger than anything else. this is why i said that everything could be a 'serious' song if you put your mind into it. i mean, yeah it is serious for 5SOS to release them and not let it flop down, but the word 'serious' in this context means something that feels like it would help you and drown you at the same time. i was deadly hooked on this song before i saw this tweet:
and the next thing i know, those words stamped on my weak ass mind as im connecting the line (there are no dots to begin with) and i ended up like a crazy mad man. it feels like everything finally makes sense, even though i know that other people have their own theories and thoughts about this song. i doubt that not everyone thinks about this song as an anthem for not giving up on something that is so bad and yet that is the only thing in this world that could help you to realize and see much better.
mix those thoughts with the album concept and you could picture a really clear situation of what the hell is actually happening and why standing in the wrong headspace could pull the trigger and blast everything off.
the concept itself portrays an easy, simple glam life. so simple people would think of you as a fake person who tried everything but kept failing at every attempt you made. glitter on their eyeshadow, smudged eyeliner because they keep scratching their eyes, breath stinks of mixed alcohol and drunk cigarettes, weird thick clothes with faux fur, wide pants, skinny pants, weird hairstyles, and anything they try to pull off as a quick temporary fixing boat as they row and row through countless bars to forget what they have done.
this is the man who prays and asks for the upper hand while begging for the smallest factor as they slowly fray away. cry and sleep on your last outfit and people would not see whatever you wear because your sad eyes are giving it away. the eyes don't lie... no matter how bleak they look.
even though the music video does not involve any of those, i think it could still work. aside from my perception of the whole concept, the lyrics hooked me. the repetition of 'i wanna stay' over and over on the pre-chorus feels like the catchy-begging part. why do you want to stay where you feel like it's the lowest of your life? why do you want to stay on the darkest side where you couldn't even light up your brand new lighter that you pickpocket from the last person who saw you cry? why? why? why do you keep repeating that you want to stay when your body doesn't even flinch after someone holds up their hand high?
the answer is: the chorus.
those parts gave it away, a very big clue of reasons on why they dont want to go. maybe the biggest and bold reason why they don't really want to leave is because everyone is a star here! this is my dream place where everyone could show off their real face even if their nose are bleeding and the small cuts from the dust almost made them choke, but they breathe fine as their hands wandering around my body to make me feel something as they act like the most gorgeous temporary owner who could control me and my whole body here—as if they are superior than me! they are a star, everyone is a star, and i am too a star!
even the one who read this post is a star!
the chorus and pre-chorus felt like a ping pong match. they successfully hit the ball to the other side, and it came back, they hit it again, and they did it over and over until it's never really done. the most perfect answer to the most lovely questions, even no one really asked. i bet you knew that feeling when you have done too much and you cant hide nor covering it all up, so when someone asks a very simple question about yourself, you replied with the most prolific and fake answer that you thought would be a good cover, but in reality: they saw how you bathe yourself on that shit hole of your own mistakes that you don't want to solve.
apart from those two parts, the bridge is the only thing makes me keep listening to the song repeatedly. luke's voice captures something that i cant really explain, its so ghostly and barely-there, like those ghosts circling around you whispering things that would make you jump from the third floor.
Livin' in the glitter, baby, I don't feel a thing
Everythin' is better when I don't know what it means
do you understand that feeling when you have too much freedom and it makes you so confused, so you choose to not have anything at all and live unhealthy as you run cunningly, thinking that everyone is so damn stupid and they dont understand you at all? when those false chances and wrong choices start to fall apart towards you just as you keep choosing to run like you only live once, the realization will hit you hard. harder than a brick, softer than a baby's butt. sharp as a dagger, dull as the yarn.
the happiness of choosing to live carelessly to avoid deep and heavy thinking is really cool and i do like it. sometimes i love it when people have their own opinion and its better than mine, then they start to choose and do things for me because they knew me and they understands me. sadly, this life will not roll just like how you want. the second you prove to them that you can live just like how you want, every angels in this earth would flick the switch and it will changes in no time.
everything is really better when i dont really know what i mean, and it does feel better to know that i dont really understand what i write. i hope that happens to me, but i regretfully need to inform you that i do. i do understand, i do know, i do realize, and i do feel what i write here. every single thing.
you could, but you really don't want to try. why do we keep thinking that the other place would be better than what we have now? are there any pretty and handsome stars out there? back to what i said earlier, maybe what 5SOS meant about the place is: the actual purgatory.
well i dont know much about it, but the thought of 5SOS being an ambassador for purgatory is pretty funny (to me). imagine they say things like, "yeah everyone here is not really dead, not alive either, they don't have a place to go, but here? they all are stars."
you all are stars to me.
